Description:
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus that causes
HIV infection and over time acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is a condition in humans in
which progressive failure of the immune system allows
life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. HIV
infects vital cells in the human immune system such as helper T
cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. HIV infection leads to low
levels of CD4+T cells through a number of specific mechanisms. When
CD4+ T cell numbers decline below a critical level, cell mediated
immunity is lost, and the body becomes progressively more
susceptible to opportunistic infections. The CDC estimates that
1,218,400 persons in the United States aged 13 years and older are
living with HIV infection. Additionally, an estimated 15,815 people
died from HIV and AIDS in 2021. Fortunately for patients with HIV,
several new therapies have become available over the past year,
including long-acting injectable therapies and options for heavily
treatment experienced (HTE) patients.
Upon completion of this
activity, participants will be able to:
-
Break down the current clinical and
economic challenges and unmet needs in managing HIV and the
burden on patients and the healthcare system
-
Differentiate new and emerging
antiretroviral therapies (ART) based on efficacy, safety,
adherence potential, drug-drug interactions, and
patient-reported outcomes
-
Discuss the role of long-acting
injectable therapy for people living with HIV and review which
patients would benefit from long-acting ART
-
Analyze newer therapies for heavily
treatment-experienced (HTE) adults with multidrug-resistant
HIV-1 infection
-
Review HIV treatment strategies
based on patient-specific factors, including age, comorbidities,
concomitant medications, adherence, lifestyle, and patient
preferences
-
Assess the managed care
considerations of new and emerging therapies, including
combination options and long-acting ART, by exploring where
these agents fit in the HIV management paradigm
