Description:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections, resulting from microbial invasion of the urinary system, most often by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. They can involve the lower urinary tract (cystitis) or upper tract (pyelonephritis), with symptoms ranging from dysuria and urinary frequency to systemic illness and sepsis in severe cases. Clinically, UTIs are associated with significant morbidity, high recurrence rates, and increasing antimicrobial resistance, complicating management. Economically, they impose a substantial burden through frequent outpatient visits, emergency department use, hospitalizations, diagnostic testing, and antibiotic prescriptions, resulting in billions of dollars in annual healthcare costs and lost productivity. Fortunately for patients with UTIs, new therapies have recently become available for uncomplicated UTIs that have shown improved efficacy and safety, giving clinicians and managed care professionals more options to manage this population. Additionally, emerging therapies are on the horizon for patients with complicated UTIs, which have improved methods of administration and efficacy. With new therapies entering the treatment paradigm, knowledge and competence gaps have been created, making it imperative that managed care physician medical directors, practicing physicians, pharmacists, payers, nurses and other healthcare professionals who manage UTI patient populations have a solid understanding of these novel options to optimize both costs and patient outcomes in their therapeutic application, for optimized clinical and economic outcomes.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Assess the prevalence and clinical and economic burdens associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) that contribute to suboptimal health and resource utilization outcomes
• Examine current guideline-driven best practices to support timely and accurate diagnosis, classification, and treatment of UTIs
• Compare and contrast newly approved and emerging treatment options, with a close look at oral antibiotics, for the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs
• Evaluate the emerging role of oral carbapenem antibiotics in the management of complicated UTIs
• Explore approaches to address healthcare disparities impacting access to UTI care and patient outcomes
• Apply managed care strategies to integrate the evidence-based use of new and emerging antibiotics in uncomplicated and complicated UTIs while controlling healthcare resource utilization
