Description:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to, breathing difficulties, a cough, mucus production and wheezing. The current standard-of-care treatment strategies for COPD focus on managing symptoms and reducing the incidence and severity of exacerbations. It is critical that healthcare professionals are educated and updated on new biologic options and strategies for their implementation into the treatment paradigm, along with a discussion of current evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of novel biologic therapies and an exploration of their therapeutic potential.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Analyze evidence-based diagnostic and treatment approaches for COPD based on the most recent GOLD report
• Evaluate recent clinical data on the efficacy and safety of current and emerging therapeutic options for COPD, including add-on maintenance treatments for inadequately controlled disease
• Discuss mechanisms of action of novel biologics and the rationale for their use to treat COPD
• Identify COPD patients who are at increased risk of exacerbations and utilize emerging biomarkers to guide treatment decisions
• Investigate managed care strategies that support evidence-based treatment in COPD that consider patient-specific factors, cost-effectiveness, and health equity principles within a collaborative care model
