Description:
The epidemiology and incidence of hospital- and community-acquired Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has changed over the past decade resulting in increased cases of initial and recurrent infection. Up to 25% of patients with an initial episode of CDI experience disease recurrence. Recurrent CDI is particularly challenging to manage.

Prevention and Management of Recurrent C. difficile Infection: Expert Perspectives for Improved Patient Outcomes

  1. Assess tools to identify patients who may be at increased risk for recurrent C. difficile infection
  2. Outline evidence-based approaches for the management of first and second recurrences of C. difficile infection in diverse patient populations
  3. Describe the role of available antimicrobial agents and biologics for treatment and prevention of recurrent C. difficile infection
  4. Apply evidence-based and expert consensus strategies for closing critical gaps in C. difficile infection care transitions and coordination
Physician, Nursing and CMCN credits valid to August 1, 2022

Prevention and Management of Recurrent C. difficile Infection: What Managed Care Needs to Know

  1. Examine the economic burden of C. difficile infection, including recurrent infections
  2. Discuss recent efficacy and safety data on the treatment of CDI, including options to reduce recurrence
  3. Apply interprofessional strategies for patient-centered CDI care, including patient/caregiver education, shared decision-making, and adherence promotion
  4. Assess the managed care considerations of new therapies, including biologic options, by exploring where these agents fit into the current CDI management paradigm
