Summary
RSV has emerged as a formidable pathogen akin to influenza, parainfluenza and rhinovirus as causing significant life changing or life threatening infections. The most affected populations are the very young and the very old. Prophylaxis of RSV infection is safe and efficacious but the cost effectiveness of one available agent, palivizumab, is controversial.

Objectives

  • Understand the historical perspective on the morbidity and mortality associated with RSV and discuss the impact to managed care organizations
  • Review of the characteristics that increase the risk of severe or fatal RSV infection, and strategies for managed care organizations to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Discuss the correlation between RSV and long term consequences
  • Discuss the role of local virology in anticipation of annual epidemics
  • Discuss the practical impact of diagnostic tests
