Summary
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a common problem around the
world. Within the US, Asian Pacific
islander immigrants have the highest prevalence. Universal screening
of pregnant women and the
vaccination of infants and children has a positive impact on the
prevalence of chronic infection in the US.
Screening, proper diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing long
term HBV complications, such as
cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Objectives
Review the importance of diagnosing HBV
Describe appropriate management approaches for HBV patients
Describe chronic HBV infection
Discuss epidemiology and natural history of HBV
Describe screening, counseling and treatment recommendations
